Open Learning gives students in eligible majors and programs a workspace on Datahub and PARASOL (formerly DSMLP) from Winter 2027, for coursework and exploration outside a course workspace or a sponsored project. You are added from your major or program, with nothing to request. Eligible Programs lists the programs.
From Winter 2027, students in these programs are members of the Open Learning workspace that Datahub lists as Open Learning - Halıcıoğlu School Affiliates.
| Program | Level |
|---|---|
| Bachelor of Science in Data Science | Undergraduate major |
| Minor in Data Science | Undergraduate minor |
| Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence | Undergraduate major |
| Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) | Graduate |
| Master of Data Science Online (MDS) | Graduate |
| Master of Advanced Studies in Data Science and Engineering (MAS-DSE) | Graduate |
| Ph.D. in Data Science | Graduate |
Other schools can offer Open Learning to their students. If your program is not listed and you would use Open Learning, tell your dean's office.
You are added to Open Learning from your major, minor or graduate program as recorded in TSS (formerly TritonLink). A second major or a minor in an eligible program counts. Open Learning says how soon a change in TSS reaches the workspace, and how long access lasts after graduation.
Warning
When your access ends, the workspace disappears from your account, and so does your Open Learning home directory. Copy out anything you want to keep before you leave an eligible program, or before your account is removed after graduation. See Retrieving Work Before Access Ends.
| Work | Where it belongs |
|---|---|
| Coursework in a course that has its own Datahub workspace | The course workspace. See Using Datahub in a Course |
| Coursework in a course without its own workspace | Open Learning |
| Practice, tutorials, and trying out tools outside any course | Open Learning |
| Independent study, a capstone, or a club, team or personal project with a faculty sponsor | A project workspace. See Projects & Independent Study |

In peak weeks, weeks 6 to 10 of a quarter and finals week, coursework is served ahead of Open Learning work, and the Open Learning workspace has lower GPU limits than at other times. The limits are lower, not zero. See Peak GPU Demand.
Open Learning does not replace a course's own GPU access. If a course you take will need substantial GPU time in peak weeks, ask the instructor to request GPU access for the course. See Requesting a Course.
Open Learning is a workspace, so you reach it the same ways as a course
workspace. In Datahub at datahub.ucsd.edu, select
Open Learning - Halıcıoğlu School Affiliates. From the login node, name the
workspace with -W OLE_HSDSC.
| Task | Documented in |
|---|---|
| Open Jupyter or RStudio in a browser | Datahub in the Browser |
| Choose the Open Learning workspace at launch | Belonging to Several Workspaces |
| Connect from a terminal | Connecting over SSH |
| Name the workspace in a launch command | Naming a Workspace on the Command Line |
| Install packages | Customizing an Environment |
| Book or launch a GPU session | Reservations |
| Find out why a session stopped | What Ends a Session |
Your Open Learning home directory is separate from your home directory in each
course. A file you save in one is not visible from the other. Keep a file you
need in both in private/, which appears in every workspace you belong to. See
Per-Workspace Home Directories.
The Open Learning workspace has access to every GPU class. See GPU Classes. Its GPU quotas and Service Unit budget are not yet published.
Warning
Every GPU session in Open Learning draws on your Service Unit budget in the workspace, whether you booked it or launched on demand. See On-Demand Lease Charges.
Remaining Balance shows how to check what is left.
Open Learning has no instructor or TA. Questions about Open Learning or the platform go to parasol@ucsd.edu or the ITS Service Desk. A problem report from Open Learning may take longer to answer than one from a course. See Individual User Issues. A question about a course's assignments still goes to that course's instructor or TA.
